Eden leaned against the side of the carriage and stared out the window. There wasnât much to see outside, but it was somehow soothing to watch the trees pass by in a small whir of greens and browns. She kept playing that dance through her mind on repeat. Heâd been so charming and wonderful. For a few moments, she had been tempted to tell him everything. He clearly didnât recognize her. What would he do or say if he realized they had an intimate past? She wasnât sure she wanted an answer to that question. The very idea of spilling her secret was not worth considering. It would not lead her down the path she hoped it would.
âWhat has you so preoccupied?â Roslyn asked. âYou must be thrilled to attend this house party. Just think, in a fortnight, Claudine will be a countess.â
âThat isnât what is important to her,â Eden answered. Sheâd purposely ignored Roslynâs question. She didnât want to tell her sister-in-law about what had been on her mind the entire journey. âWe should be arriving at Wyndam Castle soon.â At least she hoped so. She was tired of being in the carriage with too much time to think. Eden needed something else to occupy her mind with. âAre you excited for this house party?â
Roslyn wrinkled her nose. âI am, and Iâm not at the same time.â She sighed. âIâve not had much luck so far this season. Iâve danced, but none of the gentlemen want me. At least not as their wife.â
Eden sat up straighter and stared at her. âWhat do you mean? Has anyone been inappropriate with you?â Sheâd ensure none of them came near Roslyn again. âTell me everything.â Her tone was hard as she spoke. She would not tolerate anyone taking advantage of Roslyn.
âNo,â Roslyn said, then sighed again. âThey havenât done or said anything to me.â She nibbled on her bottom lip. âIâve no cause to lie at your feet. It is the ladies that are gossiping about me, and in turn, it is leading to the gentlemenâs ears.â
Eden closed her eyes and took a deep breath. This shouldnât surprise her at all. They were all talking about what her foolish husband had done. It didnât matter that heâd paid a dear price for his actionsâhis life. That wasnât enough for the ladies of the ton. They had to malign Eden and Roslyn as well. Blast them all to hell⦠âHave you heard them gossiping about you?â
âYes,â Roslyn admitted. âNone of it has been favorable.â
âItâll be different at Wyndam Castle,â she said vehemently. Eden would ensure it and enlist Claudine in helping as well. âThey wouldnât dare speak ill of you at our friendâs home.â If they did, they would be asked to leave. She would bet everything on that fact. Claudine had no patience for idiocy.
âI hope so,â Roslyn said. âBut I do not expect no one will gossip about me either. They wonât always be around our hostess, will they? Some might speak in ill terms in the privacy of their assigned bedchambers.
