Nikki Rivers pushed at her long ponytail, then gave Parker an unflinching stare. “Mr. Buchanan, you need to come down to the station with us.”

Parker looked from the two officers standing at the front door of his house to the woman standing in shock behind him. Before he could speak, Kate pushed her way around him.

“What are you talking about?” she asked, glaring at the investigators, daring either of them to step forward.

Out in the backyard, the birthday party was in full swing and Parker didn’t want this to ruin Brandon’s big day. And it sure wouldn’t do for Kate’s mother or her friends to find out that Parker was being hauled away by the police.

“What do you want?” he asked, his tone firm and in control in spite of the anxiety he felt. He wasn’t worried for himself, but he didn’t want Kate to have to suffer through this mess.

“We just need to ask you some questions,” one of the officers answered.

Parker knew both of them. He’d gone to college with Nikki Rivers and he’d seen her partner, Jim Anderson, around town. He knew why they were here. Hadn’t he been expecting this visit? Funny that they’d been talking about this very thing not minutes before, and Kate’s friends hadn’t tried to hide their doubts regarding Parker. And funny that Kate believed in him, had just declared that to him. He sure hoped God would see them through this, because Parker had a sick feeling that this would be the worst test of his faith yet.

He glanced at Kate, thinking it made sense that their

time together would have to come to an end. Wasn’t that just his luck? Whenever something good started happening in his life, the bad was soon to follow.

“Let me get my jacket and cane,” Parker said, pulling Kate back away from the door. “Go get the lockets,” he whispered.

“I can come with you,” she said, her eyes dark with anxiety.

“No, you can’t leave Brandon. Just get that plastic bag from your purse.”

Turning to the waiting detectives, Kate said, “I’ll be right back.”

Then Parker limped to a nearby umbrella stand to grab one of his walking sticks. A more sedate one than the whimsical Patchman cane he’d been using for the party. He picked a silver-handled one made from rosewood, his demeanor calm and calculated. He couldn’t let this interruption ruin what had just happened between Kate and him.

She came back into the foyer, the plastic bag in her hand. “Here, Parker.”

Taking her aside, he said, “I’ll just go and get this over with soon.” Trying to reassure her, he added, “If I cooperate, I should be back before all the cake is gone.”

“They can’t do this,” Kate said, turning toward him, her blue eyes full of doubt and fear. “Parker, you should call Seth, at least. You might need a lawyer.”

“I don’t have anything to hide,” he replied, memories swirling like ink spots in front of his eyes. “Look, Josie knew all of us.
