The Devil’s Lair

It was well past midnight when Davenport made his way back to The Devil’s Lair. This time of night it was packed with patrons and Kingston would be moving about the gaming rooms. Sam was waiting at the back door to admit him and leaning up against the back wall with his arms crossed over his chest wearing a disapproving, if not fatherly, look on his face, was John Cavendish.

“Evening, Sam. Kingston having a busy night?”

Sam shut and barred the door behind him. “Not as busy as it gets during the height of the season, but there are enough nobs in town now to make it a profitable evening.”

Davenport knew exactly how busy London became during the season and The Devil’s Lair, being the most reputable and high-class gaming establishment in London, people were usually waiting to get inside. He moved over to stand in front of Cavendish.

“Any word on Toussaint or anyone that might be connected to him?”

Cavendish pushed away from the wall. “It has only been a few hours since you told me what I needed to be looking for, and no, I have not discovered anything of importance.” He reached out and grabbed a wilted flower from the ragged bouquet Davenport still clutched in his hand. “Is this a different plan you have for finding Toussaint?”

Davenport frowned as he looked down at the bouquet. He threw the pile on a table nearby. “They were for Abigail.”

“If what Kingston told me about what you said to her in the park is the truth, you are going to have to do better than that.”

Davenport narrowed his eyes. Damn Kingston for not being able to keep his mouth shut. “She turned me away and is not nearly as eager to forgive me as I had hoped, that should make you happy.”

“Aye, it does make me glad to see that Miss Bailey has some sense about her, but since you seem determined to have the girl, I would give you a bit of advice.”

Davenport sighed, not really in the mood for his friend’s advice but knew he was going to hear it anyway. “What do you suggest then?”

Cavendish grinned. “Buy a nicer bouquet of flowers. That shouldn’t be too difficult for a man of your means.”

Davenport growled as his friend walked away. “I’m going to find Kingston.”

He made his way up the stairs to the gaming rooms. It was busy but at least a person could move freely without bumping into others. He searched the crowd for Kingston. It didn’t take long to find him. He was standing off to the side in the shadows watching a group of young men playing a game of hazard.

Kingston turned and nodded his head in acknowledgement as Davenport came to stand beside him. “How did you fair with the lovely Miss Bailey?”

Davenport stared straight ahead. “I was not admitted through the front door, so I had to climb through her window.”

Kingston turned his head sharply toward him. “Isn’t that how all of this began in the first place?” He chuckled.
