This time they all settled in the comfortable chairs by the window. It still felt like a formal meeting. Hippolyta wondered if Lady Northland ever relaxed.

‘If Mrs. Minchin was the intended victim,’ Lady Northland began at once, ‘then doubtless it was Mr. Minchin who killed her. I believe she was a wealthy woman, and who else could possibly benefit here in Scotland? You’ll need to find out if she had any other relatives, of course, who might come into some of the money. But I’d be surprised if they were up here.’

‘I shall of course do that, my lady.’ Durris had his notebook out, and made a mark in it.

‘Now, if she were not the intended victim, of course, your job is much more difficult,’ Lady Northland went on. ‘And I can quite see that in the confusion, the puddings might have become muddled. I have taxed my memory, and cannot remember who placed her pudding in front of her in the dining room, for I was watching everyone coming in and wishing they would settle at the table so that we could talk properly. But no, it was like a horse fair. No one would sit down. I was about to stand and issue some instructions when, of course, Mrs. Minchin entered her crisis.’

‘Did you have a pudding, my lady?’ asked Durris.

‘Me? I had not troubled at that point to find one. I’m not sure if there was one before me or not.’

‘I understand there were several. Which one would you have picked?’

‘The one with the nuts,’ she said, without hesitation. ‘I am very fond of nuts.’
