Dr. Oslo and Mr. Adley are talking in hushed whispers when I come back from my room with my bathing suit. They don’t hear me wheel up to them until Mr. Adley sees me over his daughter’s shoulder. He straightens up, cutting his daughter off. “It was nice to meet you, Miss Davenport. I’ll be seeing you again very shortly. We should have an answer within a few days.”

My stomach bottoms out. A few days? I’m thrilled and terrified at the same time that I could be rid of a family that doesn’t believe me—and Safe Haven—in such a short amount of time, but also, I don’t have anywhere to go, or anything to do.

Mr. Adley turns around and leaves, leaving Dr. Oslo standing there staring at his back. After he goes through the doors, she straightens her shoulders and turns around. “Are you ready?” she asks, a little too perky. This is the first time Dr. Oslo has tried to hide anything from me. She’s always been very candid about everything, even telling me she didn’t want me anywhere near her brother. This, though, has affected her in another way. A deeper way.

I follow her out the door, and we go through the same routine as the past couple of times she picked me up to take me to our pool session. I help myself into the front seat and she collapses my wheelchair to put it in the trunk before getting in behind the wheel. She’s quiet as she pulls out of Safe Haven and onto the main road. There’s a wave of confusion mixed with anger coming from her that I don’t understand but feel like I’m the reason for. Instead of keeping quiet, I say, “I didn’t know he was coming.”

“Oh, I know,” Dr. Oslo says, her voice clipped. “This is all Dom.” She shakes her head, her ponytail swishing from side to side.

I want to tell her about the emancipation because I’m excited, but I get the sense she wouldn’t care at the moment. I’m also worried for Adley right now. If I had a cell phone, I’d text him a head’s up that his sister might kick his ass when we get there. “Is there something I should know about your father and you guys?” I ask. It seems only right to ask her since there’s something clearly wrong.

She looks over at me, her shoulders finally relaxing. “I’m sure Dom will tell you, but just know that whatever he says, he’s sugarcoating it for you.”

I nod. Words are failing me. Part of me wonders if I’ve gotten myself mixed up with someone else who can’t be trusted, but there’s no way Adley would put me in contact with his father if he was a bad person. This is all just family drama. “I’m sorry if seeing him upset you. I didn’t know.”

She sighs and leans backward into the seat. “I know, Macie. I’m sorry I’m acting this way. He just caught me off-guard.” She shakes her head.
