Chapter Twelve

Napa was successful in many ways. They got the perfect wines for the restaurant, and Flynn got to kiss Gabby. Lord, her kisses made him as drunk as the wine.

When he picked her up at her door today, she was in sunglasses and eating whatever she kept in her pocket.

By the third time she reached inside and popped something into her mouth, he asked, “What the hell is in your pocket?”

She grabbed her head. “Don’t yell at me. I’ve got a headache.” She rubbed her stomach. “And my belly is not quite okay.” She pulled a handful of chalky, sherbet-colored pills from her pocket and opened her palm. “Tums. They’re only a few calories, and they help.”

He reached past her to pick up her suitcase. “Is that what you’re eating on the job?”

“I think I have an ulcer.”

He put his hand at the small of her back and ushered her out the door. “Geez Gabs, go to the doctor.”

“Until now, I haven’t had medical insurance.”

The heat of anger boiled in his blood. “Now you do, and I want you to make an appointment.”

She tipped her chin to look up at him. “Yes, boss.”

A kid ran past them, waving a plastic sword and yelling. Gabby stopped and winced. “Remind me of how noisy kids are if I ever think of having one.”

“You’re just hungover, but you know what they say about that?”

They entered the elevator, and he pressed the button for the first floor.

“Stop drinking?”

He wrapped an arm around her shoulder and kissed the top of her head. “Nope. Hair of the dog that bit you is the only cure. How many Tums did you take?”

She glanced at her palm. “I don’t know. One? Ten? Not sure.”

“We’ve got time, let’s go.” He dropped the bags at the valet and steered her to the restaurant.

Bacon and maple syrup smells floated through the air.

As soon as they were seated across from each other, the waiter rushed over to take their order.

“She’ll have a Bloody Mary and dry toast. I’d like the eggs benedict.”

Gabby groaned and leaned against the wall. “Why did you let me drink so much wine?”

“You and I both know that no one lets you do anything. You do whatever you please. As for the wine, you had three glasses total.”

“I’m good for one.”

“Cheap date.” He rose from his seat and moved to sit next to her.

“Really cheap since Luxe paid for everything.”

“Not the balloon ride, because that was on me.”

She took off her glasses and looked up at him. “Thank you for that. It was the best part of the day.”

He tugged her closer, and she melted into him. He liked the way her curves fit into his hollows. The way she sighed when her head rested against his arm.

“And I thought our kisses would have ranked high.”

“Hmm,” she hummed. “We kissed? I don’t remember that.”

He lifted a brow and peeled her from his side. “No memory at all?”

She laughed and winced. “None.”

“Liar. I kissed you before the drinking ever began.
