Millicent Monroe rides silently in the front passenger seat of Huge Allen’s Cadillac Escalade as it hurtles south down Interstate 25. She stares pensively out the window at the passing scenery. The Rocky Mountains rear up from the Great Plains abruptly, no foothills, from flat tabletop prairie on the left to rugged towering snow-capped peaks on the right.

Her cell phone buzzes inside her large purse. After a frenzy of digging, she finds she has a text message. “Huey is okay. He will be waiting for you at Great Sand Dunes.” She snaps her phone shut, jams it back into her purse.

Huge glances at her. “Anything important?”

“Honor sent another text telling me Huey is okay. And that he is waiting for us at Great Sand Dunes.”

Huge speeds up. “We’ll be there in a couple hours.” Millicent starts to cry. Huge glances worriedly at her. “Why didn’t you contact the police?”

“Honor said not to.”

Huge mulls this over. Until his cell phone rings. Millicent watches closely as he picks it up from its niche in the console. “Yeah.” Pause. “That’s good.” Pause. “Okay, that’s great. But I can’t sign anything right now.” Pause. “Something’s come up.” Pause. “It’s important. I’ll be back in Denver tomorrow.” Pause. “Tell them I definitely want to sign with them, but something extremely important and extremely personal has come up. It has nothing to do with football. Tell them I will definitely sign with them as soon as I take care of this very private matter, which has no bearing on football whatsoever.” Pause. “Sorry. That’s the most I can say about it.” Pause. “I’ll call you as soon as I wrap this up. Which should be tomorrow.” Huge ends the call and replaces the phone. He glares out the windshield.

Millicent stops sobbing as she stares at Huge. “You’re signing with the Denver Broncos?”

“Yes. If they don’t sign someone else in the meantime.”

“I’m sorry.” They both stew silently for a moment. Then, “How did that come about?”

“The Broncos want to lock up an experienced quarterback. Their starting quarterback went down in the playoffs with a serious injury. He required surgery, and they don’t know if he will be ready to go by training camp. Their second string quarterback injured his hamstring in a pick-up basketball game a week ago. Weird. The quarterback they just drafted is a question mark. They need someone like me.”

“Weird, yes. We should be used to weird by now.”

“Why didn’t you tell me I had a son?”

“You signed with Detroit so soon after that weekend in Eureka Springs. You were resurrecting your career. We were already parting ways. I didn’t want to distract you.”

“You didn’t want to distract me?”

“You needed to concentrate on football. A baby at that point in your life would have been a distraction. Besides, I was already talking to an agent about my book. Our lives were diverging.”

“Diverging?”

“You were glad to see me go, Hugh. If you’d made an effort to stay in touch, you would have learned I was pregnant.
