1. My father’s caregiver has finally received subsidized rent; however, she discovered that the amount she earns as his caregiver makes her ineligible for reduced rent. She asked if I would pay her in cash. This seems a little shady, but I would like to make things easier for her.

Cash payment means your parent loses his medical deduction on his taxes. In addition, the caregiver is no longer entitled to her earned unemployment, workers’ compensation, or Social Security benefits. In addition, her government subsidy increases the likelihood that cash payment will get her into trouble—and, as a consequence, you as well.

2. I simply don’t have the head for running a business. On the other hand, I cannot afford the cost of an agency caregiver. Suggestions?

If, for any number of reasons, you do not want to use agency caregivers, working with an accountant or a bookkeeper is an affordable alternative to running the business on your own. He or she can take care of the EIN and other forms. Nevertheless, you will need to keep detailed payroll records so the accountant or bookkeeper can file the required monthly state and federal contributions.
