Davidson owes as much to Quine as he does to Tarski. He was a student of Quine's at Harvard in 1940 when Carnap, Russell, and Tarski were there. Harvard (Figure 5.1) then was the world center of formal philosophy and Davidson picked up on it.

Reading Carnap as a graduate student [at Harvard] had helped to persuade me that traditional philosophical problems could be treated with clarity and insight using the formal resources of logic. In 1940 Carnap taught at Harvard. I attended his lectures, and even met him briefly. Bertrand Russell, Tarski, and, of course, Quine were all there that year. (Davidson 1999, p. 34)
