Maya

Maya

I spent the whole day barely aware of my surroundings, only moving around the apartment from time to time, feeling like a ghost. I felt overwhelmed with emotions but empty and I had no idea how to cope with it.

In the evening, after finishing the ice cream from the refrigerator and while I was lying on the couch watching my favorite TV show, I heard the sound of a message arriving on my phone.

I reached for it, without getting up from the sofa. I saw the name “Carter” and went to immediately put the phone away, but my eyes caught the beginning of the message,

“Maya, this is very urgent.”

I opened the message and read it in its entirety immediately.

“You need to come to my house right now, You know where my parents live. Something has happened that I've always been so afraid of and I need you to be here. Please.”

I knew perfectly well that I was acting stupidly by grabbing my car keys from the dresser and running down the stairs, flying out of the house like a bullet, but just the thought that something could happen to Carter and his daughter had me abruptly terminating my reflection on the couch.

As I drove to one of the largest houses in Corning, I remembered how Carter and I used to sit on its steps watching the starry sky.

I shuddered as I parked the car. Too many memories of those days.

I ran across the veranda and rang the doorbell.

I was ashamed to admit just how afraid I was that something terrible had happened. The minute that passed while I waited at the door seemed like an eternity.

Finally, I heard the click of the lock turning and the door immediately opened. I expected to see something terrible, it was only Carter, who looked at me with surprise and a smile.

“It hasn't been more than five minutes. How did you get here so quickly?” he asked.

I did not understand what was going on.

“You said it was urgent, so I came. What happened?”

Carter indicated that I should come inside and I obeyed his invitation. He walked around the front of me and headed deeper into the house, from where quiet music was coming.

Nothing had changed.

The house was still majestic with beautiful paintings hanging on its oak walls.

We arrived in the large dining room. Right in the middle of the room was a table, set for two with a long candle standing right in the middle. Carter, as if floating past the table, took out a hidden bouquet of large roses, whose scent permeated the house. He walked up to me and handed me the bouquet with a smile.

I took it , but stood silent, not even a “thank you”.

After a minute, I blurted out, “Carter, what the hell? What's going on?”

He grinned, “Well, since you and I are engaged, then we should go on at least one date together.”

Before I could say anything Carter added, “Lily is sleeping upstairs, and I've made your favorite dish - if it still is your favorite.
