Chapter 6
It took them almost three days to get the eggs cataloged and a nice list of what kind they were. Then, just when they thought they had it down, it was Imp that discovered they were getting more in daily. Not as many as the first time, just one or two at a time, but it was overwhelming to think of how many dragons had left behind their children for one reason or another.
âThey were killed. You get that, right? Dragons would never leave their hatchlings unless they were killed or murdered to prevent them from keeping them safe.â George told Ignis that he didnât want to think of so many deaths. âI can understand that. I do. I want to ask you something while weâre on the talk about what might have happened with the dragons. Do you suppose their bones are someplace? Or do you think theyâve been picked over so much that there isnât a trace of them left?â
âWhy would that be important? Not that I donât think you might have a point, I just donât know what weâd be able to do about it.â Ignis told him. âOkay. I guess I can see that. Bones being found would have humans asking a lot of questions we donât want to answer. Did you ever find any when you were living in the caves?â
âYes. A great many of them. The deeper in the caves I explored when I was living off the grid, they call it, the more complete the dragonâs skeleton would be. I usually had the faeries gather up whatever I found and take them to the gardens theyâd create.â George asked him if there had been any information he could glean from the bones. âYou mean like a clan or whatever? No. I mean, I could see how they lost their lives. I also found a great many warrior fae that had died with them.â
âWarrior fae? I think Iâve heard of them. My uncle, he told us that a fae would be paired with a dragon when they were small, and theyâd train together. After they were deemed a working pair, theyâd be pressed into service to care for places that could afford a dragon and his leader.â Ignis said he had it right. However, most of the time, they were never cared for well. âI donât know how that would work when someone is waiting on payment and riding a big fucking dragon.â
They both laughed, coming up with ways the dragon and fae would get back at the person that was past due on bills. When it was apparent that they werenât going to get anything done for being silly, the two of them went out into the sunshine. The sun, after being inside so much over the last few days, felt good.
âIâve enjoyed hanging out with you, George. Youâre a good man. If I had to pick someone to be mated to my sister, it would have been you. Hands down, youâre the best.
