No Small Thing

Read Matthew 13:31–35.

We all know that small things can have a big impact. A microchip the size of a fingernail can contain as much information as an entire library. The Black Death, a disease that spread in Europe in the 1300s, killed more than two hundred million people.[31] It was caused by a flea the size of a pinhead.[32] The actor Tom Cruise is only five feet, seven inches tall, but his movies have made more than eight billion dollars![33]

But none of this compares to the impact of one little Baby. Jesus came to a very lost world and ended up saving it.

In today’s Bible passage, Jesus compared the kingdom of God to a mustard seed. This is one of the smallest seeds that exists, and yet the bush that comes from it can grow up to ten feet tall. Jesus knew from the very beginning that the Christian church was going to get big. And not just mustard-tree big. REALLY BIG!

The book of Acts tells us that after Jesus rose from the dead and went back to heaven, the apostle Peter and the Christian church spread the news about Him to the ends of the earth. Today there are more than two billion Christians in the world—a third of the entire world population![34] A God who can make something grow that big deserves our attention, don’t you think? If God is that powerful, don’t you think He can help you with the problems you face? Like helping you get along better with your sister? Or helping you on your math test? God is bigger than your problems. We’re going to hear more about the mustard seed later, and about how much faith it takes to change the world. But for now remember that God can take even your smallest efforts and do big things with them.
