Publisber’s Note

Many graphic designers admire the delicacy and flair of eighteenth-century pen flourishing as exemplified by the work of the English writing masters collected and engraved by George Bickham in The Universal Penman (Dover, 1954, 20616-5). Much of the charm of this style of calligraphy lies in its elegant decoration, with lovely swirls and curlicues.

Adapting such material to contemporary design projects often requires major surgery involving cutting and painstaking retouching. Creating this sort of calligraphic ornament for a particular purpose takes special skill, infinite patience and more time than most artists can spare.

Kiyoshi Takahashi, a New York-based designer, created the hundreds of designs in this book to meet the recurring needs of his own studio and of others in his profession for precisely rendered, readily usable calligraphic ornament for packaging, publications and similar applications. Using technical pens of various sizes, he has achieved the balanced thicks and thins of crow-quill technique, free of the feathering, blotting and irregularity of line that so often plague artists in that medium.

Mr. Takahashi was born in Manchuria, then a Japanese province, in 1940. His family returned to Japan after the war and he lived there until 1966, when he came to the United States to study graphic design at the New York Phoenix School of Design (later absorbed by Pratt Institute). Mr. Takahashi began his career at DiFranza Williamson Inc., where his responsibilities included general design, packaging and typography. In 1978, he founded Typony Inc., which has published his Modern Monograms (reprinted by Dover in 1985, 24788-0) and his Etcetera Graphic Devices and Sports Graphic Devices (both distributed by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company). The present collection of original calligraphic ornament, in the spirit of the fine penmanship of the past, demonstrates the perfection of his draftsmanship and the versatility of his vision. On the second and third pages, he gives examples of how the ornaments can embellish modern typography, blending the old and the new with pleasing effect. As part of the Dover Pictorial Archive Series, the material in this book is copyright-free. The designs will find a myriad of uses in graphic arts and various crafts.
