CHAPTER 19

HARPER

“Girl, you gon’ have Red looking at my ass sideways. All that cooking you did for Legend.”

I laughed. “Zaire always ate healthily, and I love cooking all types of meals. With Legend growing up the way he did, I knew he would appreciate a meal like that.”

“Hell, Red appreciated that shit too. You know my cooking skills ain’t on your level.”

“I can teach you, Shana. It doesn’t look like I’m gonna have much of a business to run.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat. Another cancellation had come through. They’d text me while Legend was eating. Zaire was following through with his promise. He’d called me from an unknown number this morning, realizing I’d blocked his ass. His exact words were, I guess I’m going to have to prove to you how much damage I can do. I couldn’t even go back in the room with Legend after that. It was the first time I took delight in knowing that he wasn’t feeling well. He wouldn’t remember to ask me about it.

“Everything’s gonna work out, Harper. Just have faith. Have you talked to your mama?”

“No. I’ll probably call her today.”

“I know y’all aren’t close, but she has influence in Lake Charles. Maybe she can get you some orders and loyal customers.”

“Yeah. Lake Charles is only an hour away. Well, now two hours. Legend told me he was moving me in with him.”

“What?”

“Yeah. I told him everything. Even when I said no, he said in so many words that it wasn’t up for discussion, and I would do what he said for me to do.”

“Damn! I like that shit. Red is kinda the same way.”

“I liked it too, surprisingly. He gon’ get what he asking for as soon as he’s feeling better.”

She laughed. “Y’all feelings are strong for each other.”

“Yeah. It’s crazy.”

“Well, come on, so we can get you back to your man. We’ll go to Houston tomorrow to get your car. Or we can go later. I know the longer it sits there, the more you’ll have to pay.”

“Yeah. Can we do it today when we get back from Beaumont?”

“Yeah. I got’chu, girl. I meant to ask, have you heard from Journey’s crazy ass?”

Journey was my sister that was involved in all kinds of shit. We weren’t close at all, and we grew up differently. She lived with my mama and had a different father. My daddy had said he refused to let me grow up a spoiled ass kid that didn’t know how to take care of herself. He was never married to my mama. He just told her that he wanted to raise me, and after a year of them going back and forth, she let me go.

“Girl, no. I ain’t talk to Journey since she had a whole fit about wanting me to make a cake for some party. When I told her I didn’t have time to fill her last-minute request, she went off. That was almost a year ago.”

“I remember that bullshit. I just thought that maybe she’d reached out to apologize or something.
