Now we’re getting down to the nitty gritty details that can make or break your book. The first one is your book cover. Do you remember the old adage “You can’t judge a book by its cover”? I’m here to tell you that’s complete bullshit because most consumers put a lot of emphasis on how a book looks.

Let’s take a look at my two previous book covers and I’ll share why I think they’re so successful.

First, look at the images of both books. They stand out because there is a single figure or image to focus on. It’s not cluttered, or full of distraction. Also look at the type of photos – they have a vintage or retro feel to them and by their nature stand out from the other books in the same category.

If you’re struggling to figure out what you’d like your cover to look like I suggest you go enter your primary keyword into Amazon and see what covers it returns. That will let you know what your fellow authors are doing and what you can do to stand out from them.

Once you’ve seen what others are doing, go over to shutterstock.com or your favorite stock photo website. When you’re there enter your primary keyword and once the images return go to the “refine your search button”. Once there select vertical images, photos only, and non-editorial images.

I use vertical images only so there is space for the graphic designer to put the title, subhead, and my name on it. You want non-editorial images because using photos of famous people on your cover is a huge no-no and opens you up to getting sued into the stone ages.

After you have your image selected it’s time to go and hire someone to create your cover. Trust me, hire someone else to do this no matter how amazing you think your skills are, chances are someone can do just as good if not better, for a lot less money than you think.

I get 95% of my covers made at Fiverr. What I do is type in “kindle cover creator” in the search engine. Then I try to pick the best outsourcer possible by looking at only the ones under the highest ranked section. Next I look at how long it takes for them to complete an order (4 days or less is the sweet spot) and their average response time (24 hours or under is acceptable).

Finally I look at their portfolio of work and if they offer a rush service for under $20. I always buy that if they offer it because I hate waiting. Other things to consider is how many revisions they will give you with your cover and the file format they send it to you. I prefer to have a Photoshop file format (.PSD file) so the formatter can do whatever they need with the image.

Once you pay you’ll need to provide a few things to the designer. Your book title, authors name, subhead, any images you like or want to use, and a general idea of what you’re looking for.
