Fig. 5.2 House: Collaboration
I incorporate the philosophy and work of the collaborative problem solving (CPS) model originated by Dr. Greene (and further developed and disseminated by him as well as Think:Kids at Massachusetts General Hospital under the leadership of Dr. Ablon) into the work that I do as a parent coach. In guiding you to use this model with your child, I will be asking you to include your child’s thoughts, concerns, opinions, and decisions more than perhaps you have in the past. You may need to teach your child the skills she lacks step by step and provide her with support along the way. You may also need to reduce certain expectations, at least for now, as your child focuses on learning other important lessons or perhaps until she has had more opportunity to catch up developmentally to her peers.
There are a few basic beliefs in the collaborative problem solving model:
• Kids do well if they can (not just if they want to)!
• Your explanation guides your intervention—your belief about what is driving behavior helps you decide how to intervene
• Kids often lack the skills to do well, not necessarily the will
• These skills are often taught best using real problems and conversations—not just lectures, rewards, or punishments
• Problems are best solved when you work proactively—when things are calm and the problem is not pressing
If your child is struggling to behave and work appropriately, it is up to the adults in his world to help figure out what is getting in the way so they can help.
