11. Why a Korean War?

As a sixth form student, in the days when the only ways news reached our family were via the BBC radio news at 1 and 6 pm and my father’s daily News Chronicle newspaper, the Korean peninsula and events concerning it were somewhat sparse. Most people now will be aware of, and concerned about, North Korea’s regime and their capability to fire nuclear weapons. Perhaps a majority will be aware of the successful Korean electronics manufacturers Samsung; the country’s car production as the fifth largest in the world with Hyundai, Kia, SsangYong and Daewoo as the best known South Korean manufacturers, in what is now considered to be a very thriving economy. However, I suspect that even today the majority are not really clear as to how the ‘Forgotten War’ came about. So here is a short account of Korean recent history from my personal research, utilising the online courses provided by Professor Kim of Seoul University.

The geographic location is important, for the Korean peninsula extends for 684 miles into the Pacific Ocean south from China towards Japan, and is surrounded by the Sea of Japan on the East and the Yellow Sea on the West. The Eastern part of the peninsula is mountainous with the Paektu Mountains of which the highest peak is at 9003 feet. The land area is some 85,270 square miles and in 2013 had a population of 74.5 million. As the peninsula is now divided into two separate countries it needs to be recognised that they have different geographical and socio-economic characteristics, for the current North Korea has much less agriculture than the present South Korea, due to their different topography. The two countries did not and do not now have similar sized populations. There are 24.72 million people in the North but
