I couldn’t have stopped my eyes from rolling if I wanted to, which I didn’t. I knew bullshit when I heard it. “Smooth. I didn’t realize you were such a bullshitter, Gage. So that’s how this is going to play out? You’re going to try to play slippery with me and I’m what? Supposed to pretend to be a dumb blonde? Fall at your feet and tell you how much I appreciate you saving me?”

He leaned back in the chair and arched one eyebrow. “I think what you did out there could be considered swooning. That’s close to falling at my feet.”

“Don’t try to smooth talk me, Gage Varo. It won’t work. I’m not one of those Hollywood

bimbettes you spend your time with.”

My sharp reply made his smile fade a little. “How is it that you can be so intelligent with me but with other men you’re practically a Stepford Wife?”

“By other men you mean my fiancé, I assume? This jealous ex-boyfriend act you have going on isn’t flattering.”

A look of concern came over his face and for the first time that night, he was serious. “Jordan, what do you know about him really?”

“I’m not doing this with you, Gage, and you need to just accept my marriage to Brock is happening.”

“I’m worried about you. I think there’s something strange about him and his sister. He won’t see you since last week, and she’s all over you like white on rice. Why?”

“Oh my God! You’ve been following me for days. How do you know Brock doesn’t want to see me? He’s busy at work and we’re planning on—”

I stopped explaining myself just before I let it slip that we were eloping in just days. That’s all I needed was to let that cat out of the bag and have Gage go all Sherlock Holmes on me with his theories that Brock was up to no good.

“Planning on what?” he asked. God, he was like a dog with a bone. He wasn’t going to let this go.

“Our wedding? Christ, Gage. I’m getting married to the man. We need to plan. A big wedding doesn’t come together in a few days or even a few weeks. He’s an important businessman. His wedding needs to reflect that.”

That same look of hurt flashed in his eyes again, and this time the effect of my words settled into the rest of his face. The time for smiling had clearly ended.

“Ahhh, the wedding,” he said in a low tone, his voice catching on the word wedding.

“I think you need to go.”

I stood from the couch and began making my way to the door. The sooner Gage left, the sooner I’d stop noticing how hurt he looked at the thought of my marrying Brock. And how sexy that smile of his still was. And how when he took me in his arms just a few minutes ago my body reacted like it had never done with my future husband.

He grabbed my wrist and stopped me before I made it very far.
