24. Change your perception of a situation

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on removing the negative thoughts and unhelpful behaviours that can lead to emotional problems, including stress. According to cognitive theory many of us develop negative beliefs about ourselves as a result of our experiences during childhood and early adulthood, for example, being bullied at school, parents divorcing, failing an exam, etc., and that these take root in our minds until they become automatic. Behavioural theory is based on the belief that behaviour is a learned response that is also a reaction to past experiences. CBT is based on a combination of both types of theory.

According to CBT an event or situation is only stressful if you think it is, because your feelings aren’t facts – they are just your perception of an event or situation and your ability to deal with it.
