Pull the yarn over through where you went in, but do not pull through the excess tail

Go in under the next top row, in between two stitches

Yarn over the crochet

Pull the yarn over through where you went in

Repeat

Continue with 5-8 until you get all the stitches you want to have the border

Slip the stitches from the crochet hook to a knitting needle slowly

Now there were not a lot of stitches here so I did them all at once, but you may have to move the stitches to the knitting needle as you go along. Therefore, I suggest that you have a crochet hook like the one here. It has a smooth end and the entire crochet hook is the same circumference. I have some that have a larger handle on them to prevent stitches from sliding off and some have decorations that make them difficult to slide stitches over. They are more for ergonomics and stability of stitches on knitting projects.

Depending on the size of the project and the length of the cable, you can continue and go around the whole border to pick up stitches or just do one side at a time. See section 26 for a few different types of boarders.
