Chapter 6

Rigging and Animation

Rigging and animation could not be more fundamentally different from one another, but they are so closely linked in 3D animation that one cannot really exist without the other. Rigging is the logical side of 3D animation, leaving no room for interpretation of what can and cannot be done. Animation, the movement of objects, represents the art and performance side of 3D animation. It deals with all the gray areas of artistic interpretation of motion, performance, and style. These two opposites can cause many battles between departments, but when rigging and animation artists work together, they can achieve great results. This chapter presents the fundamental tools and techniques used by 3D animators today, from hand-keyframed animation to motion capture, and basic hierarchy rigging to complicated character rigs.
