CHAPTER EIGHT

The Schnibers returned to London in about the middle of September. By that time Monte Carlo had begun to pall on all of them.

The yacht had not been a success, and Ruth had been unable to find a young man.

No one was therefore sorry to board the Blue Train one hot, stuffy afternoon, and wave goodbye to the brilliant sky and sea, as it puffed slowly along the coast.

But back in London Ruth was as discontented as before, lying lazily in bed, spoiling her figure by eating too many rich sweets, continually querulous that they were not at a party, or being invited to houses where she wished to go.

The Schnibers, for all their climbing, did not receive invitations to many so-called smart parties. Diana was glad that there would be the usual crop of charity balls coming on in the winter, for which they could take three-guinea tickets and find themselves rubbing shoulders with most of the people they wished to see and be seen with.

Mary Carter had, of course, put Mrs. Schniber on different committees, which kept the fat little woman busy day after day. She hurried from a meeting in the morning, to one in the afternoon and on to a press tea, where she invited the attentions of every press photographer, so that she searched the Tatler, the Sketch and the Bystander every Tuesday evening in the hope of finding herself included amongst their Society portraits.

Ruth, however, was too lazy to bother to go to committee meetings. Gradually Diana came to the conclusion that Ruth was too lazy to do anything unless she were certain there would be a man present.

Ruth was longing to get married – had she been honest with herself she would have owned up that a lover would supply her needs almost as well. She wanted a man, and she was finding the social round, which did not provide her with one, unsatisfying in every way.

In reality it was a tragedy. Had the Schnibers remained in their home in the North, Ruth would undoubtedly have been a great success with the men of the neighbourhood. She was good-looking and she could, when she wished, be entertaining and bright. She would have enjoyed the ‘socials’, she would have easily outshone the other girls, and she could have indulged in her taste for bright cherry-coloured clothes.

As soon as she arrived back from the South, Diana saw Jimmy and found that he was still working at his garage and enjoying the life far more than he had anticipated.

“I had a bit of trouble with some of the other mechanics at first,” he said. “They resented my coming in as one of them, seeing that I was what they termed a toff. Things were a bit unbearable for a time, I don’t mind telling you, and then I offered to knock a man’s head off, just to show him, and did. After that we shook hands and became great friends, and now everything’s O.K.”

“He didn’t hurt you?” Diana asked.
