Real success is never about your own intelligence, education, beauty, or talent. Rather, it is about the Lord Jesus Christ shining through you.

Living the Principle

You experience trials so you can be free of the sin nature left within you.

In Romans 8:20–21, Paul states, “The creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.” In other words, you experience frustrating trials so that you can be free of the sin nature that is left within you. While it is true you are forgiven of all your sin when you accept Christ as your Lord and Savior, the tendency to want to sin remains within you—and God must break you of it.

As the story of Peter illustrates, God uses trials for two reasons: (1) to transform you into the image of Christ (see Romans 8:29; Ephesians 5:1), and (2) to develop your potential as His representative in the world (see Philippians 3:9–10; Colossians 1:24). God used Peter’s denial to break him of his pride and shape him into His representative to the world. As Peter himself would later remark, “Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator” (1 Peter 4:19).

How will you live out Life Principle 15 this week? Identify a specific trial or difficult situation you are currently facing. In a journal, write down your initial reaction to the situation on one side of the page. Were (or are) you scared? Devastated? Angry? Insecure? On the other side, write down the best possible scenarios as to what God might be accomplishing in your life (or in the lives of others) as a result of the situation. Spend some time in prayer, asking God to change your focus from the worst to the best possible scenario. Then, take this a step further and thank Him for what He is teaching you through the trial.
