It’s all gone. Everything I’ve worked for is down the drain overnight. I feel like an idiot for ever hoping that my life might change, that things might get better, that I might have a chance to go pro one day and build a life for myself that my family never got to have.

But the past is a ghost. It haunts me no matter where I go. A plane across the country doesn’t change that, nor does a game that I devote my life to.

By now, I feel like I’ve read the article over a hundred times, trying to will the information in it to change. I can’t believe that everything I’ve spent the past three years struggling to put behind me has now been seen by everyone on campus and beyond it.

I have practice in an hour, and a home game at the end of the week. I’ve already talked to Coach Newsom; thankfully he supports and trusts me, but he’s getting hit with substance accusations and steroid claims from every direction. I feel like an asshole for putting him in this position. But I never dreamed that this would happen. I thought I could go to school, play the game that I love, and move forward with my life. But here we are.

I stand in my apartment, my phone face down on my bedside table. I can’t bear to look at it. Already I’ve had over a hundred calls from different reporters, but not one from the girl I need to hear from—Camile.

I should have never agreed to do the documentary. I should have known that this would happen—that somehow, no matter how much I held back, my secrets would come pouring out. I curl my hand into a fist and press it to my mouth. All I want right now is for Camille to call and crush the suspicions that are rising within me. I want her to tell me what I need to hear: that she didn’t do this. Because all I can feel right now is betrayed. She’s the one that I let into my world, and I barely had the chance to be vulnerable around her before she spilled my secrets with the world.

Of course, there’s always a chance that maybe it wasn’t Camille. My heart burns with that hope. I want it to be anyone but Camille so that I can tear them apart. And if it turns out that I’m right, and that Camille was the one who sold my story to the media, it will be the end of me.

I head to practice. There’s no other option for me—the game has to continue. When I show up to the court, parking outside, I notice news trucks lining the streets. I pull my hood over my head and jog to the door, narrowly avoiding the reporters that jump into action the moment they notice my car. I shut the court door behind me, heart thumping hard in my chest. I feel like a criminal.
