Chapter Twenty-One
Esme
âI donât think Iâve ever worked so hard for my food in my entire life,â Creed grunts as he brings his oyster knife back up to the shell, looking for that sweet spot in the hinge where he can get some leverage, just like I showed him. After a few wiggles, heâs able to slide the knife in, twist it, and pry open the oyster. Then he hands it to me so I can sever the muscle from the shell before adding it to the rest of the oysters.
Weâd have a lot more if we didnât keep eating them as we shucked.
But thatâs all part of the fun about having oysters.
âYou canât expect me to come to Long Island and not get oysters. Blue Points are found here. Theyâre some of the best oysters around.â
He pries open yet another oyster, then hands it to me. âAnd the biggest.â
After severing the muscle, I add some of the shallot mignonette I made, then bring it up to Creedâs mouth. âBut so delicious.â
He parts his lips and I tip it back into his mouth, watching as he swallows.
âI canât disagree with you there. Although thereâs something in this kitchen I find much moreâ¦satisfying.â He loops an arm around my waist and pulls me against him.
âAnd whatâs that?â I ask breathlessly.
âYou donât know?â
I chew on my bottom lip, playing coy.
He curves toward me, his mouth skimming mine. âYou, Esme.â He moves a hand to my face. âYou satisfy me in ways I didnât think possible.â
I moan, surrendering to his kiss.
This entire scenario is a double-edged sword. While it allows us to finally be together and not worry about getting caught, it will make returning to the real world all that more difficult. Especially now that Iâve been able to enjoy Creedâs kisses whenever I want. Itâll make me want to steal more kisses.
I remind myself thatâs the precise reason things have to be this way. So that one day, I can steal all the kisses I want.
Creed slowly curves back. âCome on. These oysters wonât shuck themselves.â He releases me and picks up his oyster knife, getting to work on prying open another one.
âTrue, but I think the oysters wouldnât mind waiting so we can go for round three. Or is it four?â I waggle my brows.
His eyes darken as he leans toward me, taking my bottom lip between his teeth. âYouâre insatiable, Esme.â
âI have been eating oysters. They have amino acids thought to increase sex drive.â
âAll the more reason for me to keep shucking.â
He leaves a kiss on my lips before devoting his attention to opening the oyster, a silence settling over us as we get back to work.
âI donât want you to think Iâm only interested in sex with you,â he says after a beat.
âI know youâre not. You tell me practically every day how much you love me.â
He sets the knife on the counter and wipes his hands on a kitchen towel. Itâs so normal. So domesticated. And I love everything about it.
