Chapter 17

Vorax

They’d have probably strung me up by now, I thought as they led us toward their village. Thankfully, they sensed some connection with Hera that saved my ass. I just had to watch my back for now.

The Exodorian village was a sight to behold, a vast network built into the trees, merging and weaving its way among the branches. It blended seamlessly with the jungle around, almost as if it was one with it.

We were led to the center of the village, a large open area surrounded by trees that seemed to reach up to the heavens. A deep sense of peace filled the air, and I couldn’t help but feel like I was entirely in another world.

Slowly, we began to venture around, taking in all the sights. There were exotic plants, flowers and herbs growing wild and untamed everywhere we looked. The pathways that connected each tree were crafted by hand from wooden planks carefully fastened together with rope. Some parts even contained exquisite carvings that seemed to depict stories from generations past.

The Exodorians guided us through a few different pathways, each winding their way around towering trunks and eventually leading us deeper into the heart of the village. As we followed our guides, it became evident that these people had a deep connection with nature, which made me feel right at home.

Finally, we stopped in front of a giant tree that looked like it had given birth to many others around it. Its trunk was thick, and its branches spread far into the canopy above us like a giant umbrella offering protection from both sun and rain alike. Sitting beneath one of its limbs was a large gathering place, an open arena where people could congregate and share stories or dance under the night sky.

Pent gestured for us to sit down as the Exodorians began speaking soft melodies in harmony with nature itself, reminding me of ancient tales my father used to tell me when I was young. We sat mesmerized until eventually, we heard clapping echoing throughout the trees.

“You have been accepted, for now,” Pent, the village elder, said to Hera with solemn respect. “Because you are connected to the Wyrd, a path through the universe and time itself, transcending your earthly body and mind. It’s a way of connecting with your true self and understanding your place within it. A journey of self-discovery and enlightenment, where you can learn about your strengths and weaknesses and how they fit into the wheel that turns.”

I watched Hera’s face as Pent spoke to her. I sensed that this was something that, deep inside, she had known all along but didn’t have the understanding to shape into words.

“Our journey stretches beyond the known universe,” Pent began, his voice a whisper between us in the night. “Brave adventurers walked the Wyrd. They told tales of vast magical lands filled with wonders that mortals can only dream of. Forests filled with talking trees, castles made from clouds, and rivers that glowed like pearls in the night sky.
