CHAPTER 21

Thanksgiving break passed slowly for Jonathan. He was lonely now that Samantha was home and he wasn’t in touch with Dominic anymore. Final exams were just around the corner, so when he wasn’t taking care of the lab animals, he spent his time studying. At home, Samantha also spent much of her time locked in her room studying, avoiding her mother. Before she left to head back to Central Texas University, her mother scolded her for spending all her time isolated in her room. She wanted her to be more of a socialite, a southern belle. She told Samantha she was too obsessed with her studies for her own good. Whereas most parents would be proud of Samantha’s work ethic and bookish nature, her mother was distressed by it. Samantha simply wasn’t well rounded enough in the eyes of Sara Reid. But Samantha was used to this criticism and paid no mind to it.

The moment she got back to campus she went with Jonathan to the library to continue her studies. “Quick,” Samantha asked Jonathan. “Can you help me study these flashcards, please? Just say the name term and I’ll tell you the definition. Then tell me if I’m right.”

Jonathan and Samantha were sitting at a table studying together, yet separately. They had been in there for three hours. Their plan was to study for three and a half hours—from two o’clock to five-thirty—and then meet Tom and Elijah for dinner.

“This stack of flashcards is thicker than a textbook! What do you mean by ‘quick?’” Jonathan joked. “Alright, quick, what’s Neuroplasticity?”

Samantha furrowed her eyebrows and thought for a brief moment. “Neuroplasticity refers to the physiological changes in the brain that happen as the result of our interactions with our experiences and environment.”

“Correct,” Jonathan said as he flipped to the next flashcard. “What are the three major anatomical planes?”

“Oh, easy,” Samantha said. “The sagittal plane, the coronal plane, and the transverse plane.”

They went back and forth for the next thirty minutes. Jonathan read out a term, Samantha gave the definition, and then Jonathan would move to the next flashcard. Samantha didn’t get a single one wrong. They had only got through a little over half of the stack by the time it was five-thirty.

“Alright, we ought to go meet up with Tom and Elijah,” Jonathan said when it reached five-thirty. “You know these cards better than the back of your hand at this point, anyhow. Any more studying and you’ll know more than your professor. I think it’d be healthy for you to take a break from studying.”

“Okay,” Samantha said. “I’m hungry anyway.”

Jonathan and Samantha packed up and made their way out of the library. As they made their way out of the main entrance, they were intercepted by Dean Pilling. Dean positioned himself in front of Jonathan with his arms crossed, stopping Jonathan in his tracks. He stared at Jonathan as if he was better than him, and Jonathan had to fight the urge to take his backpack off his wheelchair and swing it at him.
