WILL CITIES BE LIVABLE IN 2030?

The movie Metropolis, the Bilbao revival, and the gentrification of Pittsburgh and so many other American cities remind us about the highs and the lows of urban living. So do the stories of Rosa Lee Cunningham and those of the highly educated engineers, artists, doctors, and financiers who inhabit the world’s global cities. By 2030 there will be four hundred cities that have populations of more than 1 million people. Those urban agglomerations will be dualistic in nature and populated mainly by overweight or obese people hooked to their favorite streaming services and social media apps, a trend that leads to social isolation as opposed to engagement. Many will be home to a vibrant creative class of knowledge-intensive workers. A majority will face formidable challenges related to pollution, congestion, and security. The cities most exposed to climate change will suffer from a shortage of freshwater and an excess of saltwater in the form of flooding. Will our behavioral adaptations make a dent? Will vertical agriculture develop fast enough? Will a technological breakthrough come to the rescue? Chapters 6, 7, and 8 explore the coming revolution in invention and innovation, and its potential for improving the quality of life in cities and elsewhere moving forward.
