There are many excellent books available just on bargello patterns or try making up your own, which is really fun.

If you only have two-thread canvas or penelope, and you are eager to try bargello, try working a long cross stitch over the warp threads. Be sure you slant the top stitches in the same direction. You will be surprised how many people will think it is true bargello.

The Old Florentine Stitch

This stitch is a set pattern stitch of the bargello type. It may be worked in just one color or in alternating rows of two or more colors. It is not very snag-proof in that the long stitches cover nine mesh, but it does work up quickly for the same reason. Be sure that there is enough wool in your needle; about a third more than usual may be necessary.
