We’ve all driven the same route to work, walked the same path around our neighborhoods or hallways at home or the office. After numerous trips around the same block, we might conclude that there’s nothing new to see. But that conclusion is due to the fact that we’re probably not paying close enough attention. After all, there’s always something new occurring. This practice sweeps away mental cobwebs and gets you off autopilot. When you really want to take a fresh look at the people and places you encounter, try this:
HOW
1. Mentally erase your old mindset. Begin by wiping off your mental chalkboard to clean off old, entrenched beliefs, biases, and opinions about what you see.
2. Create a fresh mindset. Do this by imagining that this is the first time you are seeing a place (freeway, neighborhood, or workplace, etc.) or meeting the person before you (partner, co-worker, friend, etc.), or engaging in an activity.
3. Feel the excitement of someone traveling to a new country or unexplored location. Allow yourself to feel the wonder and spaciousness that comes from exploring and seeing something for the first time.
4. Notice, learn, or experience one novel thing that you discover about this “new” exotic place or person before, whether large or small.
5. What would you tell the people “back home” about your interesting travels?
6. Take a mental snapshot or actual photo of something beautiful, pleasant, or exciting from your day.
WHEN
Use this when things feel humdrum, dull, and repetitive, and you need to reenergize. Getting a fresh mindset is key to remaining alive and resilient.
