Chapter Eight

Damaris fanned herself gently. It was one of the first warm days, the harsh winter finally over, and at her bidding a chair had been carried outside. She had chosen a spacious back lawn, bordered by flowers, with a cluster of leafy trees at the back under which she now sat.

It had been easy, in the end. Although it had not been the intention for King Oron to be in contact with the Eleskan girls, Damaris knew that she had captured his attention from the very beginning- from there it had only been a matter of keeping it.

She had made up her mind when she was sitting in the carriage awaiting her turn to present herself and bow to a foreign monarch. The piercings were unfamiliar and heavy, making her nipples ache. She had glimpsed the massive crowd from the small window and her anxiety had spiked- all these people gathered to see her in this state? How could she bear it?!

But then she had spotted the Captain, standing back after his speech, his arms crossed over his chest- proudly presenting his handiwork. The man had an eye for beauty, but he seemed not to care that he had dragged these girls from their homes and country, completely against their will.

As she watched him, something hard had formed in her chest, and she had made up her mind. She would walk proudly with her head high. She would flatter this nation, she would be artful and coy, and she would win Favor- she would play their game.

She had not spared Adrian a single glance as she sailed regally past him. He was less than nothing to her, a man who had taken advantage of her, physically and emotionally, then dropped her when she was no longer of use.

After the first evening it had been easy. She smiled, remembering her early days in this country.
