Today, if your anxiety amps up, try saying, “I am feeling anxiety” rather than “I am anxious.” How does that feel different? How will feeling your emotions versus being your emotions help you?

[Your Notes]

Day 45

Do to others what you would have them do to you.

MATTHEW 7:12

The Golden Rule we are all taught is to treat others the way we would like to be treated. All good and fine, especially, I think, when it comes to what Jesus was referring to, which was to extend grace, generosity, love, and kindness to all people. When we remember that every human we meet is created in God’s image, and is therefore a reflection of our loving Creator, it feels easier to meet them with grace, love, and kindness, even if they don’t meet us with the same. This is who Jesus is and who He tells us to be. However, the Golden Rule is best applied when we remember to add empathy to it. We are all very different and what you want in a relationship (or an interaction) may be different from what someone else wants.

Empathy is to meet someone with the presence of who Jesus is and identify with what they may be feeling. Empathy is to sit beside someone and seek to understand them. Not necessarily agree with them, simply to seek to understand what their life is like. When we choose empathy while also living out today’s verse, I think we will find that our relationships are better, we appreciate more people (even those who are different from us), and kindness wins.
