5 - Be Forgiving

In addition to being grateful, another factor which studies show deeply affects your happiness is getting angry and bearing grudges.

Most of us know how it feels to have a bad driver pull out in front of us, to get annoyed when the shop is out of stock of something you want, to have your TV stop working, to hear noisy arguments from the house next door... so many things happen every day that can get you frustrated.

But if you are truly going to be happy, you will need to learn to be forgiving. Do not let these negative experiences cloud your whole day.

It is important to say that forgiving is different to not caring. It would be an impossible task to go through life not caring about the bad things - in fact, it would be a strange existence for someone to do so. However, with practice we can learn to accept that these things happen, and when the blame lies at another, forgive them for it.

When that driver pulls out in front of you, don’t hold it against them. Accept that the situation was annoying, but forgive the individual and move on with your life. They most likely didn’t annoy you deliberately, and therefore do they really deserve to be a subject of your wrath? Even if it was deliberate, maybe they are doing it because they’re annoyed someone did it to them - and perhaps it needs an individual like you to break the cycle of anger!

So the simple exercise for this simple chapter is this:

Try it. You’ll see how much of a difference it makes. The next time you find yourself in a situation which would normally have your hackles rising, take a deep breath and in your mind forgive the person who you feel is to blame. Whereas when you bore a grudge the experience would gnaw away at you all day long, you’ll feel a kind of freedom once you have let it go.
