"Is it?" He slipped it off and passed it to her. "It's my college ring. I guess it is a little different from most."

Nancy examined it briefly. "Eliot College," she read. "I don't think I've heard of it. Where is it?"

"Just outside Seattle, Washington," David replied. "It's pretty small. Not many people know of it here, but I liked it. Listen, Nancy, not to change the subject, but I heard a rumor this afternoon that the police were going to search your home and your father's office. I'm telling you so you won't be too thrown by it, if it happens."

"Thanks," she said dryly, "but it's already happened. You seem to be pretty well plugged in to local rumors, especially for someone who hasn't been in town that long."

"It's one of the skills I had to pick up when I decided on investigative journalism," he explained. "But it's not all that hard, once you know how. Most people love to show how much they know, if you give them the opening. The trick is to figure out whose inside information is the genuine article. But that just comes down to a lot of careful cross-checking of sources."

"You're really involved in what you do, aren't you?" Nancy said. "What first drew you to it?"

He laughed. "I guess I like to know inside information as much as anybody," he said.
