"How did things go?" I asked Osiris.

"About as well as could be expected. I almost told him about the honour in an attempt to get him to stop being so prickly."

I chuckled. "What stopped you?"

"Not enough people around." He took a sip of wine. "I don't care how many people hear about it, but you know that he does. He thrives on the attention."

I glanced past my husband and to his brother. He sat at one of the other tables, with Nephthys by his side. She didn't look as bad as she had when she'd arrived, which was reassuring, though I could tell she wasn't completely comfortable being so close to him again.

"At least it'll all be over soon. We'll just have to remember to give him awards and positions every few years and it'll be fine." I placed a hand on his arm and gave it a light squeeze.

"I hope you're right."

"I am. His ego is his downfall."

"Just because you keep saying that, doesn't mean you're right," he quipped.

I raised an eyebrow.

"All right, you probably are."

"I hope I am. And not just because it'll make me right."

Music started up from across the room, and dancers emerged, cutting our conversation short.

I leaned back in my throne, reaching out to lace my fingers with Osiris'.

The dancers formed a line and began to dance in time to the beat. I watch in awe as they move in unison. It isn't something I've ever been capable of doing, at least not to the level as those in front of us. Their girdles tinkled as the golden disks attached to them bounced off one another as they moved. It was something to behold.

I managed to pull my gaze away for long enough to scan the room. Most people were completely captivated by the entertainment, though I couldn't help noticing the way Seth was leering at the girls. I'd have to make sure to instruct them to be careful. The last thing I wanted was for him to take advantage of someone who didn't feel like they could say no. If I told the dancers it was their choice, and that they could say they'd been ordered not to if they wanted to, then they'd be more likely to say no to him if he asked.

At least, that was my hope. I'd heard that Seth could be charismatic and convincing when he wanted to be, not that I'd seen that side of him directed at me. I doubted he could forget that I was married to his brother, and sat in the position he wanted to be in. Or maybe it was more than that. He wanted everything Osiris had. Did that include me?

A shiver ran down my spine. I turned my attention back to the dancers, hoping to rid my mind of the kind of thoughts it was having. The last thing I wanted was to dwell on what Seth wanted from me in particular.

Osiris squeezed my hand. I jumped, startled by the attention.

"Are you all right?" he whispered.
