Chapter Eleven

We walk for the next two hours, and just before dark, the city fades away into a wide section of trees that promises a nature park of some kind. The rain started to pick up about an hour ago, and we’re all soaked to the bone and chilled. The temperature began to drop as the sun vanished behind the clouds, and we find a rest stop nestled behind the trail that leads into the trees, and we prop open the door while Michael and Wilkinson scope it out for zombies.

Todd and I walk together through the denser trees off the path, looking for dry firewood along the damp ground. We collect smaller twigs and a few bigger logs. It won’t last us for long, but it’ll be enough to warm our bones and dry our clothes. Aaron is watching out the door for us to return, and the rest of the group has been moved inside for safety. I see that one of them has drug a round, metal bin from outside and moved it to the center of the floor.

We load up some of the wood on top of the trash that never got collected, and hopefully all of the paper inside will help the fire catch. Aaron produces matches from a side pocket of the pack he carries, and we hold our breath and wait. Within minutes, we have a roaring fire going, illuminating the small building.

There isn’t much here aside from a bathroom on either side of the building, some tables and chairs, and a row of vending machines along the far wall. Bulletin boards nearby reveal a layout of the trail, along with wildlife information and the history of the park. None of it matters though, and we settle in around the fire to warm and dry ourselves. Nobody wants to talk, so we settle into a sad silence, but I know that all of our thoughts are on Rachel.

Daisy and Felicia cry quietly, one on either side of me. Levi and Felicia have their heads down together, and I watch them in the firelight. The glow of the fire casts giant shadows across all of the walls, and it also highlights just how exhausted everyone looks. The day has dragged all of us down, and when Daisy rests her head on my shoulders, I don’t even mind, where I might normally have bucked at the display of affection.

“Do you think there’s anything left in these vending machines?” Todd’s voice is soft in the silence, but it still makes me jump.

“Probably,” Michael says, eyeing the closest one. It’s a drink machine, with Gatorade and a selection of pop and water. “Too good of an opportunity to not at least check.” He gets up with a groan that betrays his real age, and together he and Aaron use Levi’s crowbar to try and pry it open.

Todd and Janelle leave the comfort of the fire to smash open the glass fronts on the snack ones. I remain by the fire to keep the kids company, but I’m watching the others as they emerge victorious.
