Chapter Twelve

I wake in the morning and head to the bathroom right off our rooms, startled by the sight of my own reflection in the mirror above the sink. A dark purple bruise stretches across my temple and disappears into my hairline and another one spreads across my cheekbone. The throbbing has subsided, but seeing the blemish takes me back to that stockroom, and for a second, my chest tightens and it’s hard to breathe. I hold my own gaze in the mirror above the sink, my hands curled around the porcelain basin, keeping me on my feet as my knees wobble.

A knock at the door breaks me from my thoughts and I call out. “I’m almost done.”

“Just making sure you’re okay,” Tobe says softly.

I hear her footsteps retreat, and I sigh, letting go of the sink basin. I get dressed in my clothes from the day before, wishing I could take a shower, but settling for wiping myself down with more wet wipes. Maybe later we can boil some water from the lake and actually scrub down, but for now I feel decently refreshed. Tobe takes the bathroom after I leave.

Ryder and Reese are discussing something on the couch in the living area, and it look like an argument that’s heating up. Ryder gets to his feet and runs a hand through his shaggy hair, looking exasperated. “We can’t just leave the girls here alone!”

I stop in the doorway, my hand on either side of the frame. “What’s going on?”

Reese gives me a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes, and I feel my shoulders tense up. “It’s nothing serious, Sam.”

“Yes, it is.” Ryder’s brow furrows as he looks at me, and I get the feeling that he’s contemplating. “Look, this isn’t my first choice, but we don’t have any other options.”

“Ryder—”

Ryder puts his hand up to silence Reese, and I’m surprised that he falls silent. “There’s someone on the island with us. I noticed the smoke while I was doing my rounds this morning, and I followed the lakefront to a house down the road. The smoke is coming from a chimney, which means someone started a fire recently. We need to check it out to make sure they’re friendly, so we don’t end up with our throats cut.”

“And you don’t wanna take Reese?”

“Ideally, I would take him,” Ryder says, glancing down at his brother. “He’s the most useful to me. But that would leave you and Tobe here alone, and now that we know we’re not alone, that’s not happening. You might be able to hold your own against a zombie or two, but not other people.”

“So, you wanna take me?” I deduce.

“It’s not ideal, but I think it’s our best option. Our safest one, at least.”

“And you disagree?” I ask Reese.

“I don’t like the idea of leaving you and Tobe here alone, but there’s no telling what Ryder finds in that house. I know he thinks he could probably solo it, and in the event it’s just some redneck that’s somehow survived his long, he’d probably be okay.
