Finally, Mom drew a moustache on my face with makeup and tied a bandana around my forehead. “You look great, matey,” she said.

“Aye, aye,” I replied. I wished I could show my costume to Hector. He really liked pirates. But Hector was trick-or-treating in his own neighborhood tonight.

After Mia got into her Princess Sing-Along costume, I said, “Yo ho ho, lassie. Let’s pillage for treasure.”

“I have a better idea. Stop talking that weird pirate language and let’s go get candy,” Mia said. “Waggles is coming too. You’ll love his costume.”

Waggles walked into the room. He wore Mia’s ballet tutu around his stomach.

I did not love his costume. I did not even like his costume. I said, “Waggles looks ridiculous.”

Mia leaned down and whispered loudly in Waggles’s ear. “Don’t listen to Zeke. He’s jealous because you’re a beautiful ballet dancer and he’s not.”

“Let’s just go,” I said.

Mom, Mia, Waggles, and I walked across the street to get Charlie and start trick-or-treating. Alexa stayed home to read her Totally Cute Boys magazine and pass out candy.

I rang Charlie’s doorbell. After a few seconds, she opened her front door.

“Ready to trick-or-treat with me?” I asked. Before she could answer, I said,
