“Take me home,” my sister demanded. “Please, Blair. I’ll make you something to eat if you’re still hungry.”

I didn’t argue. But as I drove, I monitored traffic in the rearview mirror, fearful that the bad guys in the blue truck had called for backup.

I traveled a circuitous route to my sister’s apartment and didn’t detect anything even resembling a tail. When we arrived at 6:45, I found the identical parking spot I’d occupied before, which I took to be a good omen. I followed Cynthia out of the car and into her building. We rode the elevator in silence; exited on the seventh floor.

Cynthia opened the door, turned on the lights, then dimmed them. “Scotch?” she asked, heading straight to the liquor cabinet.

With the stacks of garbage filling the apartment, it had the appearance of being half its size. Traditional furniture without anything too extravagant. Shades of burgundy and gray.

My sister opened the cabinet, the one piece of furniture that was clutter-free. “Here—” She handed me a bottle of Chivas. “You pour.”

I walked into the kitchen and filled two glasses with ice, then tipped the bottle until the glasses were full. I handed her one and took my first sip. Reality hit us both at the same time.

“I made such an ass of myself.” Cynthia blushed.

“No, you didn’t.”

“I did! I panicked. I lost control.”

“Perfectly understandable. It’s not every day someone tries to push you over a cliff.”

She half-smiled. “Thanks … for trying to make me feel better.”

It was nearing 8:30 p.m. and we still hadn’t moved.

“Hungry yet?” I asked.

My sister shook her head. “Not a bit. You?”

“Uh-uh. Let’s just drink.”

She wagged a cautionary finger. “Not good for you.”

“I know,” I said as I took a hearty swallow.

“You’ll wake up with a hangover.”

“I know that, too.”

“But you don’t care?”

“I don’t.” I picked up the bottle. “More?”

“Oh, what the hell.” She proffered her glass.

We both laughed, but it was fleeting.

“Blair—tell me what’s going on,” Cynthia said evenly.

“What do you mean?” I replied, playing dumb.

“C’mon, what have you gotten yourself into?”

“Me?”

“Yes, you.” She let out a sigh of exasperation. “You refused to call the police … the normal thing to do when someone tries to kill you. I want the truth.”

What is the truth? I asked myself. Do I even know? With all the crap that’s been happening? In Israel, then here in Montreal?

“Blair?”

I struggled to find the right words without panicking her. “Look,” I said, “someone’s after me, but I really don’t know who it is or why. All I can tell you is that I believe it’s tied into this new product I’m about to release called Zapwired.”
