Freeware Applications for Optimizing Video

If you’re doing video on a shoestring, you’ll be happy to know freeware is available, which gives you the power to convert video files to different formats. Don’t ask us what prompts people to give away software. Perhaps they get paid sponsors on their Web site. But most moms offer their kids the following sage advice, “For free, take. For buy, waste money.”

Super for Windows

If you own a PC and have Windows XP or later, a free application, Super, imports video and exports it to different file formats. As of this writing, the application (see Figure 7-19) opens most popular file formats, including AVI, ASF, FLV, MPG, MOV, MP4, and SWF. To import files, you drag and drop them into the file window. You can import multiple files and batch process them. You can export the file in a different format and specify data rate, frame rate, frame size, and so on. The only negative thing we can say about the application is that the current version doesn’t give you the option of specifying the folder in which exported files are saved. By default, they’re saved to the root folder of your C: drive. You can download Super at www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html. Scroll to the bottom of the page and then click the link to download Super.
