CHAPTER TWELVE
âYeah, he isnât home,â Megan heard Niall say, coming around the back of the lakeside shack apparently used by one Micah Gessler. âDoes he have a real house? Could he just be there?â
"Dunno. It's possible," Megan said. "But that shack, there, looks at least semi-lived in. So he could be out on the lake like those guys said he would be," Megan said, still scanning the horizon of the lake with her binoculars.
But she didnât see any fisherman, as far as she could tell. And the orange brightness of the setting sun, however beautiful it was, burned her retinas whenever she brought the lens over that region for too long.
"Well, that's where the other guys said he might be," Niall said. "But I'm skeptical about just how helpful they were really being. Might've not really wanted us to find their pal in the first place."
"I checked with Leah," Megan said, putting down the binoculars. "No job. He's collecting unemployment; last she heard of him. Probably doesn't spend much time at any permanent place of residence. According to multiple sources on him that we've talked to, now â apparently, just goes out on the lake."
She looked at Niall.
âAnd⦠doing who knows what,â she said pointedly.
"Hmm," Niall said, making a visor with his hands and scanning the lake himself. "Well, then. I guess we can try to catch him coming back home," he said. "This is a pretty big lake, though. It could be hard to spot him. Might end up going in circles around him."
Megan gestured to the motorboat, still on the trailer.
âThatâs okay. If youâre sure heâs not home, let's just get underway. If we go out now, thereâs a chance we catch him red-handed. That'd be worth it," she said.
Niall nodded and moved to push the motorboat into the water.
Once they had started, they had started the engine and began to pick up speed on the water; Megan put the binoculars back to her eyes, at first trying to stand near the prow. She discovered quickly, though, as they left the shore farther behind, that the bucking motion of the motorboat, amplified through the magnification of the binoculars, was rapidly inducing seasickness. She moved towards the back, near Niall at the till, where the roughness of the journey was less pronounced, but even that started to make her feel nauseous after a few minutes.
âUgh,â she finally admitted. âHey, Niall⦠I donât know if I can keep this up, actuallyâ¦â
Niall lifted the motor out of the water, the boat coasting.
âWhat? You wanna turn back?â
Megan thought hard for a long moment. The sun was drooping pretty low in the sky by then. She had planned to have just enough time to do one full loop around the lake before they ran out of daylight. But it would take way longer than she had anticipated if she was going to be scanning the horizon with just her naked eye. She kicked herself for not planning for something so obvious.
She pulled out her map.
