Chapter Eleven – Grace

The next week is spent preparing. I accept the fact that Nikolas is psycho and I’m now living with him. We swing by my apartment and empty it; I don’t own many things, but what I do own I consider sentimental.

Plus, nothing beats a pair of worn-in jeans.

Nikolas meets with his boss, and I get the official go-ahead to break into his house and copy everything that’s on his computer for Shark. Since Shark works for the DeLuca family, the Lucianos will feed them fake information about their business accounts, dealings, and future plans.

Hey, I don’t care what happens, as long as the DeLucas never get wind of the setup and Shark doesn’t turn around on me. He already threatened my mom, so I have to tread carefully.

It doesn’t seem like enough to keep you busy for a week, but it is, and before I know it, Nikolas and I are in his car, traveling outside the city, bags for the weekend packed in his small trunk. Sports cars don’t have the biggest space in the back, go figure.

As we drive over the bridge that connects the city to the surrounding land, I watch as the city’s border becomes smaller and smaller in the side mirror. I can never get over how strange it is to leave that place and how badly I wish I don’t have to come back.

I hate the city. I hate the people, I hate the streets, and I hate the never-ending quest to squeeze out money from everyone else. What I won’t give for a normal life—a life I’ll never have as long as I’m with Nikolas, I realize.

As if sensing what’s on my mind, Nikolas asks, “What are you thinking about?” I’ve taken a bus to my mom’s house so many times before, I know the journey by heart, so we didn’t print out any directions.

“Nothing, really. I just… I hate that city.”

“Really?” He actually sounds shocked at that.

“Yeah, I mean, there’s nothing really great about it. On the outside, it might look like law and order reigns, but we both know that’s not true. Criminals run the city, line the police department’s pockets. You can’t trust your neighbor.”

Nikolas shrugs. “I don’t think you can really trust your neighbor anywhere.”

“No, where my mom lives, it’s different. Everyone knows everyone else on the street. People leave their front door unlocked all the time. There are neighborhood cookouts in the summer. The list goes on. Something like that, you’d never see in the city.” We lived in a shitty studio apartment for so long, that when my mom finally saved up enough to get the house, I thought we’d suddenly become rich.

And then she got sick, and I had to step up.

“You don’t like living in the city,” he says. “Would you ever want to move?”

Instead of answering him, I roll my head to the side to look at him in place of the mirror on the side of the car. “Would you?”

Honestly, I can’t see it.
