Fea repeats herself.
As soon as Iâm back on solid ground, Feaâin her original xolo dog formâwhines at me.
âIâm sorry,â she says. âI think that was harder for you to watch than I expected.â
âItâs okay,â I say, and I wipe at my watery eyes. âI was just thinking about Antoine. And what it would be like if he wasnât my friend anymore.â
Feaâs tail wags. âSo youâll tell him?â
I shake my head. âI really donât know, Fea! What if that is the thing Iâll always regret? Maybe the Power of the Bees wanted me to see Maricelaâs side of things, to show me that Iâll regret it if I tell Antoine I like him.â
âWell, that makes no sense at all, David Bravo!â says Fea defiantly. âWhat a convoluted means of getting to the point. What if Iâd never taken you to my past at all? You never would have learned the truth.â
The second morning bell rings out, and I pull my phone out. Itâs 8:15. Great. Iâm going to be late!
âFea, I have to go,â I say. âPlease, I just need more time to think about this.â
âDavid Bravoooooo,â Fea sings out.
âI know, I know. I only live once, right?â
âYou do. And do you see where Iâm going with all this?â
I sigh. âYou donât want me to mess up like you did. Yes, I get that.â
âSoooooo, isnât this what your heart wants? This would be like the greatest romance of all time!â
âI donât actually know that I want that!â I say. âI mean . . . you were in love with Maricela. Thatâs clear.â
âYou donât need to be in love, David,â says Fea, jumping around. She barks a few times. âYou just have to believe it might be possible with Antoine.â
It sounds nice, but . . . itâs kinda scary, isnât it?
âBelieve in possibility!â she says, and then sheâs gone.
I rush into Mr. Bradshawâs class a moment later, and he looks up from his desk and frowns. âDonât be late again, Mr. Bravo,â he says as I hurry to my seat.
Gracie thankfully doesnât turn her whole body away from me this time. She actually smiles, even though itâs a very short one. I give her one back but then wish Iâd actually shown up early. Momâs advice rings in my mind. I really need to try again with Gracie. Hereâs someone who might be able to help me a little bit with what Iâm going through.
Still, everything is so confusing. Mr. Bradshaw starts talking about the American electoral system, but my thoughts are lost in this predicament Iâm facing. Fea was stuck in her regrets because she was afraid. But what if that was because of the time she lived in? I donât know that much about history, but it clearly wasnât easy to be a girl who liked other girls back then. But . . . am I a boy who likes other boys? Is that whatâs going on with Antoine and me? Is that who I am?
God, why isnât there a class about this kind of stuff?
I do my best to pay attention to Mr.
