Jesse

I’m at Jaxson’s office, and he’s showing me how the investigative business works. I can’t believe how much information on people is out there. You just have to know where to look. Jaxson has been showing me some of his resources. His business appears to be quite sound. I’m helping him perform the detailed background checks on the list of suspects the hospital provided.

“How’s it coming, Jesse?”

“Fine, but I haven’t found anything that can help us figure out who may have taken the drugs.”

“Maybe you need to dig deeper. Here’s a tip that Tuck, a retired police detective, once gave to me. He told me once that the person with the cleanest record is sometimes the one who has something to hide.”

“Hmm… Okay. we’ll look at all of their records again.”

“And remember, you also need to check out the people closest to them. Money is the biggest motive, but sometimes it’s for someone they are trying to protect. For instance, Charlotte? What if she needed the money to bail her son out of jail? Look for lifestyle changes and check their bank accounts. Remember, turn over every rock, and keep digging until you find that one thing that will lead to solving the case.”

“Alright. Sounds like the voice of experience talking. So, you do a lot of the groundwork from here in the office. What about field work?”

“Once we know which suspects to follow. We follow them, see where they lead us.”

I pull up the data I have for all the suspects. I start to do a deep dive into each one, even Nina. During my research, I notice that four of the suspects have been volunteers at the Hospice Center. I take the information to Jaxson.

“Do you think this is significant?”

“You never know. I wonder if they’ve also had a discrepancy. If so, it should have been reported. Let’s call the sheriff’s office and find out.”

“They can release that type of information?”

“Not really, but again, I work with the police, so it depends on who I talk to. I’ll first call the officer who is handling the case we’re working on and see what happens.”

Jaxson picks up his phone and calls the sheriff’s department; he asks for Officer Joe Hendricks.

“Officer Hendricks, this is Jaxson Gibson… Yes, that’s correct. Mr. Hicks put us on the case… Great. Listen, we’ve discovered that four suspects have also volunteered at the same Hospice Center… uh huh… I see. Do you know why we weren’t given that information right away?... I got it. Can we get more details regarding the discrepancy at the Center? Okay, we’ll drop by later today. Thank you.”

Jaxson shakes his head as he puts down the phone, and then he turns toward me to fill me in.

“Well, that was the officer handling the case for the Sheriff’s department. There has been a reported discrepancy at that Hospice Center. They are calling it a discrepancy instead of theft because someone noticed that the returned drugs started exactly matching what should have been returned.
