The day continues to be ghastly. I ring the Centre the first chance I get, and manage to get through to Mother’s nurse.

“Is she okay?” I clutch my Device to my ear like I’m trying to embed it into my brain.

“Oh, Belle. I’m afraid things haven’t improved quite yet.”

“What?”

“It’s nothing too serious. She’s just, as suspected, developed an infection around the stitches. We’re pumping her with Antis but she’s going to be here a while longer.”

“Is everything going to be alright?”

“Oh, sure, eventually. She’s very worried about the healing, of course, but we’ve been discussing how we can Tweak any issues with the results of the Empowerment Procedure.”

“I don’t mean just alright with her face! Is she going to be okay? Like, is she healthy?”

“We’ll keep an eye on her, don’t worry. Look, this happens, Belle. All Empowerments come with risk. It’s just nobody thinks the risk will happen to them.” She lists this off with an almost-bored voice.

“Can I visit? Later today?”

“Yes, of course. She may be a bit out of it. Her body has been through a lot.” Because you’ve put it through a lot, I think. “But she’s been asking for you.”

My heart grows thick and heavy in my chest. “She has?”

“Yes. I’ll tell her you’re coming. It will cheer her up.”

I lean against a wall when I hang up, hardly able to take any of it in. An infection. I have no idea what that means, other than it doesn’t sound good. My Device goes – a helpful distraction from all the scream-crying I want to do.

Joni: Hey, how did it go calling the Centre? Is your mother okay? Xxx

I look up and over at Joni in her Objectionable Corner and as our eyes catch one another’s, she tips her head in subtle concern. Such a small movement that her little band of friends don’t notice.
