chapter 2 4 âª
* * *
Frank and Maggie were almost to Softgorge. The trees were thicker here and the dirt was packed harder than around Charbury. It was late afternoon, and the sky was covered in clouds. No rain had started yet, but Frank didnât think it would be long now.
The sound of horses came up on them fast. Frank drew his LeMat and turned just in time to see a group of five men riding up on them. They all had pistols and deputy badges pinned to their coats. That eased Frankâs worries but only a bit.
He put his LeMat back in the holster, worried theyâd take things the wrong way and shoot him before finding out he was one of the good guys.
âWho are you and what are you doing here?â asked the man in front, clearly the head deputy in charge.
Frank nodded in the direction of the town. âWeâre heading into Softgorge.â
The man shook his head. Behind him, the other deputies sat by with their pistols ready. The man in charge looked them over. âWhatâs your business there?â he asked suspiciously.
Frank looked at him without blinking. âWeâre looking for John Moon and his gang.â
The man bristled, and behind him, the others did the same. âYou two fellas friends with him?â the head deputy asked.
Maggie scoffed. âJohn Moon doesnât have friends. And I ainât no fella.â
The head deputy looked at her again and blinked. Surprise showed itself on his face. âForgive me, maâam. You are dressed in menâs clothing, though.â He motioned to the other deputies to lower their guns. They did as he told them.
Apparently, having a woman for a travel companion made Frank less of a threat. Maybe bringing her with him had been a good thing after all.
âWhatâs your business with John Moon?â the head deputy asked with a softer voice this time.
âHeâs got my sister,â said Maggie, her voice choking just a little. âAnd Iâm going to get her back.â
The head deputy pursed his lips. âJohn Moon was here earlier. Robbed our bank and took off. Killed almost everyone in it before he left.â
âAre you sure it was John Moon?â asked Frank. âThereâs another gang going around pulling bank jobs.â
âIâm sure,â said the head deputy. âI saw him myself. Nearly had him, too, till he grabbed little Susie Mason and used her to get away. I was lucky to get her back alive. Six years old, she is.â
Frankâs hands tightened into fists. âDid you see an adult woman with him?â
The deputy nodded. âSure did. Didnât recognize her, but I guess she looks a little like you,â he said looking at Maggie. âOnly her hair is longer and she was wearing a dress.â
Maggie tried to stay calm. âWas she okay?â
The deputy shrugged. âAs okay as little Susie Mason, I guess. Thatâs to say, sheâs alive, anyway.â
âAny idea where they were headed?â asked Frank.
The deputy shook his head. âThatâs what weâve been looking around for. Some tracks or something to lead us in the right direction. So far we havenât come up with much.
