Milton’s mouth was so swollen that we couldn’t even get water or broth past his lips. Silent Mary, despite having seen many illnesses, examined him and came away with no solution. Trusting Pandora to mind the food being prepared for Greene’s lunch table, she stirred herbs in a dented kettle until clouds of steam rose up around her broad face. She strained the resulting liquid through a cloth that she folded and placed in a basket with several others. Following her instructions, I laid the damp bandages across Milton’s brow, returning periodically for more. Mary made it clear that her efforts were only intended to ease Milton’s suffering. She could do little beyond that. I was going back to the laundry station to resume my task of washing and boiling linens when the supply wagon arrived with provisions for Mary’s larder. The driver hopped off and commenced unloading sacks of flour, sugar, and salt.

Sarah slid out from under the tarp he had unfolded. Her hair was a sweaty tangle slipping loose from her kerchief. Dark rings circled her eyes. Worry rode her hard. She marched toward me, and I took her hand in mine.

“Sarah,” I said. “Whatever possessed you—?”

“It was the fastest way.”

“But you’ll have to go back on foot. You’ll never make it back to Two Forks before you’re missed. You won’t even get back before nightfall. There will be trouble for certain.”

She shrugged and straightened her sackcloth dress. “I’ll take the beating. I had to come. Take me to him.”

“Who told you?”

“Nobody told me. I just felt it. Take me to him.”

“Your baby. Where is she?”

“With Nila,” she hissed, pushing past me. “Now, no more questions, Margaret. Take me to him.”
