THE IMPORTANCE OF SAT SANGHA: GOOD COMMUNITY

We pick up on the energy of the minds of people around us, so it is helpful to hang out with sattvic friends: those who have good moral values, pastimes and conversation. When I had ME/CFS, I became particularly sensitive to the energy of others, and many people with whom I work say that this is also their experience. I have been involved in energy experiments using kinesiology in which we test someone’s muscle strength by pressing down on their arm, which is raised at shoulder height. These tests show that a negative thought can make our muscles weaker. I have found that if you stand two people side by side and give one a negative idea for 30 seconds, the person standing next to them is also affected by this idea and their muscle tone weakens. This evidence shows me that we absorb negativity from those around us. Remember, we are essentially patterns of energy – we are beings of vibration. If someone is negative or excessively rajasic or tamasic, it is helpful to try to limit our exposure to them. If we mix with people who partake in heavy, sensory indulgences, we will pick up on that energy. We should also avoid getting into other people’s dramas or problems too much, as this will make us rajasic. One of my first yoga teachers, Bill Feeney, used to say that we can do all the yoga and meditation in the world and eat all the right healthy food, but if our relationships are not good and we are exposed to negative people too much, our work is largely wasted. So, keep in the company of radiators and not drains!
