CHAPTER 15

Breakout

In war, you win or lose, live or die - and the difference is just an eyelash.

General Douglas MacArthur (1880–1964)

Oscar had sited himself next to the exit road, two hundred metres down from the compound entrance. He had lain there for three hours and watched the dawn arrive. The drizzle visited twice and left him chilled. But it was not the cold in his bones which made him shudder now. From his position, he had a good view up the road and was the first to see the breakout convoy approaching. Oscar’s eyes widened in surprise when he saw the Mastiff. They had not prepared to tackle anything so imposing. Cal’s reconnaissance led them to believe the only armoured vehicle the CUG possessed was the Scimitar tank, which was destroyed.

No matter. His team had patiently watched the battle unfold, and now it was their turn. Oscar was determined they would not let the others down. The breakout convoy was rushing downhill and gaining speed rapidly. The Mastiff looked like an unstoppable charging bull, its brilliant headlights shining behind a massive metal grill covering the entire front of the beast. Its engines screamed in protest and there was no doubt they were planning to smash through the main gates of the compound without stopping.

The Ambush team comprised four sections of three people. Each section had a Yellow Cross member trained to use the NLAW anti-tank missiles. There was no coordinated order for the sections to open fire. Each section was authorised to shoot at anything escaping through the main gates.

The Mastiff smashed through the compound gates, sending timber and wire mesh flying in the air. In that instant, a rocket streaked out of the bushes and exploded on the ground behind it. Rapid gunfire began as the Ambush team opened up with their assault rifles. A second smoke trail shot from the other side of the road. It seemed to head directly at the side of the Mastiff. But the beast was speeding so fast, the missile exploded on the trailing edge. When the smoke cleared, Oscar could see a rear tyre missing, but that wouldn’t stop this behemoth.

They had so little experience with the NLAW rockets and the convoy was speeding so fast.

As the Mastiff passed each team, the barrage of small arms fire lit up the vehicle with sparks as bullets ricocheted off its armour plates. They might as well have been spitting at it.

Oscar pushed himself to his knees and lifted an NLAW rocket tube to his shoulder. The tube was slick with morning dew. He turned his head to see Joyce doing the same fifty meters further down the road. The Mastiff was charging at him almost head on. It was a fearsome sight. Oscar took aim and found he was violently shaking and his heart thudding. In seconds, it would be on him!

Steady man. You can do this. Aim. Wait… Wait… Fire!

Whoosh!

The missile almost went under the Mastiff. It struck bottom left of the metal
