Role of supervisors/authorship

As mentioned in Chapter 5, journals have clear guidelines on who qualifies for authorship on a paper and it is important that this is adhered to when publishing academic work. Who is named first on an article is a major issue for many potential authors, in particular if it is in relation to their assignment or study work.

Authorship conventions vary, but it is broadly accepted that if it is their thesis or dissertation that is being used as the foundation of the paper, and they are taking the lead on writing the first draft, the student becomes the first author with the primary supervisor being the second one. Any other authors should then be allocated accordingly if they have had some written input into the article. If they have not had any input but have read the paper and may have offered comments on it, then this must be acknowledged by the author, normally at the end. It is also important to acknowledge in the same way any funding authority that may have funded the student to undertake their course of study.

However authorship is to be decided, it is important that this is discussed by all involved. A further convention in many universities is that, after a specified period, if a student does not publish their work, the supervisor may publish as first author – with the student as second author to ensure authorship convention and ethical practice. These conventions and arrangements vary and students should familiarise themselves with any guidance about this from their own institution.

Activity 1

Find out the convention and requirements of your programme of study for writing articles as it applies in your university/college. Discuss this with your academic supervisor and plan for future publications.
